What comes after Black Friday and Cyber Monday? #GivingTuesday! #GivingTuesday is a special call to action and creates a national day of giving around the annual shopping and spending season.
Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. The founding partners are thought leaders in philanthropy, social media and grassroots organizing, including the United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, Blackbaud, charity: water, GlobalGiving, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Kiva, Darden Restaurant Group, Groupon, Unilever and Venturethree14 Capital. Their mission – to prove that the holidays can be about both giving and giving back.
“#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”
The second annual #GivingTuesday will take place on December 3, 2013. The Hydrocephalus Association is proud to be a partner in this global event. During #GivingTuesday, the Hydrocephalus Association will raise awareness and funding to cure hydrocephalus, a neurological condition that affects 1 million individuals. All funds raised through #GivingTuesday will support the Reason for Hope Research Campaign.
The Reason for Hope campaign was launched in 2009 to stimulate the research ecosystem, to identify and improve clinical practices, and to better understand hydrocephalus. Since 2009, we have secured $2.5 million toward our $3 million goal. The campaign ends on December 31, 2013. By participating in #GivingTuesday, and with your help, the association will be able to exceed this goal by raising awareness of hydrocephalus to a global audience, thereby educating the general population to the condition and its challenges, and raising funds to exceed our Reason for Hope campaign goal of $3 million dollars by the end of 2013.
Would YOU like to be a part of #GivingTuesday and help raise awareness of hydrocephalus? Here’s what you can do on Tuesday, December 3, 2013:
- Share Facebook posts from our Facebook page on your personal profile; and
- Retweet our tweets on Twitter.
Why? Using the hashtag #GivingTuesday with millions of other individuals around the globe will help people who may have never heard of hydrocephalus find our website and learn more.
Of course, we encourage everyone to also GIVE on #GivingTuesday! Help us exceed our $3 million goal and allow us to continue funding critical studies of hydrocephalus and its treatment protocols and options.
