Declan Baker was born on February 4th, 2013, with profound congenital hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis. He had his first VP shunt placed at two days old. He has had five surgeries related to the hydrocephalus, but only one shunt revision. The VP shunt was switched for a programmable VP shunt when Declan started having problems with over drainage, which also resulted in an acquired Chiari I malformation. Fortunately, the new shunt and setting is keeping the Chiari I in place and he is finally symptom free. After a tumultuous first year of life, he finally gained head 100% head control around his first birthday and has been blazing through milestones ever since.
“After all that he has been through, I seriously cannot believe he is the delightful, social, happy child he is. This journey, although difficult at times, has been watching a true miracle unfold,” said his mom, Page.
