Hi, my name is Madeleine. I am 17 years old and will be a junior in high school. I have had hydrocephalus since before I was born. I was diagnosed in utero, and had my first shunt placed when I was 15 days old. Since then, I have had six shunt revisions. My last revision was six years ago.

When I was young, I had to undergo occupational and physical therapy. Fortunately, I do well in school, but math has always been a real struggle for me. Having hydrocephalus presents challenges, but I have never let it stop me in anything I have wanted to achieve.

After attending the 12th National Conference on Hydrocephalus I realized how important it is to raise awareness and funds. Also, by getting more involved with Teens Take Charge I hope to learn ways to get my school involved in HA’s WALK events and tips on raising awareness in my school because very few people there know what hydrocephalus is. I hope that by spreading awareness in my community, we can be that much closer to finding a cure for hydrocephalus.

NOTE: Madeleine’s aunt, Mary Sodano, and Mark Paulissen left Tampa, Florida on September 5th to embark on a 2,500 mile bike adventure to raise awareness and funds for the Hydrocephalus Association. The Spirit of America Ride will end in Denver, Colorado. Tomorrow we will post a blog on their adventure and how you can follow them on their journey.
