We are pleased to announce the continuation of our Education and Support webinar series! These interactive, free webinars are designed to educate our community on a variety of topics which include normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), hydrocephalus research, shunt technology and more. Our webinars will feature presentations from medical professionals, researchers and others with a direct connection to hydrocephalus. Each webinar is moderated by the Hydrocephalus Association’s (HA) Support and Education Staff and are archived and accessible following the event.
We invite you to join us on Monday, March 3, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. EST for our next webinar, “Research Update: Delivering on a Promise.” In this webinar John Kestle, MD, Mark Hamilton, MD, and Paul Gross will discuss the latest advances in hydrocephalus research and showcase several exciting studies being conducted to better understand the basic science of hydrocephalus and clinical protocols for treating patients. The presentation will also include updates on the current work of the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN), the formation of the Adult Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (AHCRN) and other HA funded research.
Meet the presenters:
John R. W. Kestle MD, FRCSC, FACS
Member, Board Of Directors, Hydrocephalus Association
Dr. Kestle is a pediatric neurosurgeon and clinical researcher in pediatric hydrocephalus. After medical school (University of Western Ontario BSc Biology 1980; MD 1984) he trained in Neurosurgery in Toronto (1984-1992) and in Clinical Epidemiology at McMasterUniversity (MSc, Epidemiology and Biostatistics 1989).
He began practice at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia in 1992. In 1998, he joined the faculty at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he became Professor of Neurosurgery and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery (2006-2013) and served as Neurosurgery Residency Program Director (2003 – 2010). In 2013, he became Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. His clinical practice has focused on epilepsy surgery, craniosynostosis and brain tumors. His research is in hydrocephalus and he developed and Chairs the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN). He trained in Quality Improvement at the Intermountain Institute for Health Care Delivery Research in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mark Hamilton, MDCM, FRCSC, FAANS
Chairman, Adult Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (AHCRN)
Dr. Hamilton is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Calgary and former Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is the Director of the University of Calgary Adult Hydrocephalus Program and Chairman of the Adult Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (AHCRN). Dr. Hamilton’s clinical and research interests focus on adult hydrocephalus, neuroendoscopy, neuro-oncology, and venous thromboembolism.
Dr. Hamilton received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto in 1979 and his medical degree from McGill University in 1983. He then moved to Vancouver for a one-year internship at St. Paul’s Hospital, and to Calgary where he completed his neurosurgery residency in 1991. Before becoming a Faculty member at the University of Calgary, Dr. Hamilton completed two fellowships – the first in cerebrovascular laboratory research at the University of Calgary from 1991-1992, and the second in clinical cerebrovascular and pediatric neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, from 1992-1994.

Paul Gross has played a critical role in the design and development of HA’s research initiative, devoting time and securing significant resources to advance this work. He and his wife, Lori Poliski, who have two children – one with hydrocephalus – co-founded the Hydrocephalus Support Group and the Hydrocephalus Research Guild in their home state of Washington. The groups support children and raise funds for hydrocephalus studies at the Seattle Children’s Hospital and Research Institute. Mr. Gross is one of 18 members of the NINDSAdvisory Council which helps set the strategy for the largest funder in brain science. Mr. Gross is also an advisory board member for the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network, which he co-founded with Dr. John Kestle. Mr. Gross launched PH144 Ventures, a management and technology consulting firm that strives to enhance existing shunt technology. Professionally he has served as a Senior Vice President at the Microsoft Corporation.
