The Hydrocephalus Association (HA) received nineteen letters of intent to apply for the second cycle of the Mentored Young Investigator Awards. Of these letters of intent, sixteen were accepted. In June, HA received fourteen final applications for the 2010 award cycle, including nine clinical projects, four bench science projects and one mathematical modeling project.
This year’s Review Panel is made up of twenty distinguished experts in the field of hydrocephalus, and includes physicians and research scientists based in the US, Canada and the UK. In July, the Chair of the Review Panel, Dr. Michael Williams, assigned each application to be reviewed and scored by three reviewers. Reviewers submitted preliminary scores and comments on each application in late September and early October, in preparation for a review teleconference to occur on October 13.
Based upon scores submitted and follow-up discussions to be held on the review teleconference, the Review Panel will present a final ranking of applications to the HA Research Committee. The Research Committee will discuss the recommendations of the Review Panel and will make its recommendations for funding to the Board in early November.
We expect that the projects selected for awards will be funded so that work can begin in January 2011. Once the awards are finalized by the Board, all applicants will receive feedback on their respective applications in the form of comments from reviewers designated for sharing with applicants.
