I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus after developing meningitis at nine months old and had my first shunt placed at that time. Since then, I’ve had four shunt revisions, for a total of five brain surgeries.

From 2013 to 2024, I lived without a shunt. When I began experiencing symptoms again, I had a new shunt placed in the front of my head instead of the back. I was told the new location was necessary because I have a Chiari I malformation.

Having the shunt moved from the back of my head to the front was difficult at first, but I learned to move forward. I also have a supportive family. My mom, my stepdad, and my brother have been with me since I was a child.

I am married and have a 10-year-old daughter. My wife also has hydrocephalus and cerebral palsy due to how she was born. Our child does not have hydrocephalus, or “dodged the bullet,” as we like to say. My wife started working toward her master’s degree in addiction counseling, though I help her with typing.

I have been quite successful with school. I have a master’s degree in management, a bachelor’s degree in crime analysis, and an associate’s degree in criminal justice. I am two years away from my second bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity and possibly another master’s degree.

Working while continuing my education can be challenging, but I get through it. I work full-time at a small post office that can get busy, and I am looking to move up from my current position. My workplace has provided accommodations to help me manage the challenges I may face.

I have put myself through the wringer, working overnights during the pandemic and holding security jobs for places such as Walmart for years. I have continued working despite the many twists and turns that can come with living with hydrocephalus.

Despite the challenges my wife and I have faced on our journeys, we continue to drum on, stand up to each challenge, and keep going.
