Introduction to Mindfulness Course
Mindfulness meditation has been shown to improve our ability to handle stress and can help with anxiety, depression, and pain. This short virtual course will teach the fundamentals of mindfulness and will equip you to begin your own meditation practice. The course will meet on Zoom for an hour a week for five weeks, and each session will include teaching, practice, and time for discussion. In order to allow everyone to participate fully, the course will be limited to 10 participants. In order to derive the maximum benefit from the course, participants will be expected to practice for at least ten minutes a day between sessions.
We are offering this course for patients with hydrocephalus aged 18 and up and for parents of children with hydrocephalus, as support for handling everyday stressors. If you have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, we ask that you check with your mental health provider whether they consider mindfulness meditation a suitable modality for you at this time.
The teacher for this course, Tessa van der Willigen, is trained to deliver workshops in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and is currently completing further training as a mindfulness teacher under the guidance of Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield (of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Center, respectively). Following a long career in international economics, Tessa recently completed a Master’s degree in Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Tessa is a Board member of the Hydrocephalus Association and has a 24-year-old son with hydrocephalus.Tessa’s mindfulness workshops at our 2018 and 2020 Conferences were among the most popular sessions.
