NPH Left Untreated

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is typically characterized by progressive symptoms that require intervention. The progression and significance of NPH symptoms can vary, and evidence suggests that longer duration and greater severity of symptoms is an indicator that successful treatment is less likely. Typically, early diagnosis and treatment is a gauge of an increased chance of recovery, but this does not mean that patients who have had symptoms for years can’t improve with treatment. For patients whose symptoms are very mild, their doctor may advocate for close monitoring of the clinical condition without proceeding immediately to treatment with a shunt.
